Report: Porter era comes to swift conclusion in Phoenix

02/15/2009 - Phoenix, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Phoenix Suns are reportedly set to cut ties with Terry Porter after the first-year head coach led the club to a mediocre 28-23 record at the All-Star break.

The Arizona Republic reported Sunday that Alvin Gentry will take over the coaching reins on an interim basis on Monday after Porter is let go, which, according to team sources, is a mere formality.

If the regular season ended at the break, the Suns would be on the outside looking in at the playoffs, currently slated as the No. 9 seed in the competitive Western Conference.

Porter, who had spent the previous two seasons as an assistant under Flip Saunders in Detroit, inked a three-year deal to mentor the Suns in June 2008.

The Milwaukee native also coached his hometown Bucks for two seasons, leading the club to an improbable playoff run in his first season (2003-04). However, after a disappointing 30-52 campaign the next season, Porter was let go and went to work with the perennially contending Pistons.

Gentry, a 20-year coaching veteran in the NBA, holds a 177-226 career record as a head coach after stints in Miami (1994-1995), Detroit (1997-2000) and a two-plus year stay as the maestro of the Los Angeles Clippers (2000-03).

The 54-year-old Gentry joined the Suns as an assistant coach in 2004 and was the only holdover of Mike D'Antoni's staff.
